The Challenge
Hewens Free Primary School required a comprehensive upgrade to their heating and ventilation systems to improve energy efficiency, comfort, and air quality for students and staff. The project needed to be completed with minimal disruption to the school environment and deliver a tailored solution suitable for educational spaces, including:
- Complete remodelling of the existing LTHW (Low Temperature Hot Water) heating system
- Installation of new heating emitters in high-usage areas like the hall and classrooms
- Improved ventilation systems, particularly in toilet and communal areas
- Modernised public health services aligned with updated toilet layouts
The Solution
BMS Ltd carried out a full refurbishment of the heating and ventilation systems, which included:
- Full replacement of the LTHW system, including new radiant panels across the facility
- Installation of new heaters in the main hall and adjacent classrooms to optimise comfort and efficiency
- Introduction of modern controls and remote thermostats to allow temperature management in each zone
- Localised mechanical ventilation added to all toilet areas
- A natural ventilation strategy was introduced for the main hall, supporting air quality through passive systems
- Adapted public health services to match the redesigned toilet layouts in both the hall and classroom areas
The Results
The completed project delivered long-lasting operational and environmental improvements, including:
- Better thermal comfort for students and staff throughout the school
- Smarter heating control with improved energy efficiency
- Enhanced air quality and ventilation tailored to each space
- Reliable system performance that meets the needs of a busy school environment
- Modernised facilities in line with current education sector standards
