The Challenge
Building & Maintenance Services Ltd were proud to be awarded the opportunity to complete mechanical services within the Great Hall at Swansea University. The primary challenge was meeting the stringent noise criteria of NR15 within the Auditorium — a particularly ambitious target for a performance space.
The Solution
To achieve the required acoustic performance, the mechanical services serving the Auditorium were meticulously designed, ultimately achieving NR16.
Key elements included:
- Main air handling plant, chillers and associated services designed to operate within strict acoustic limits
- Oversized ductwork to reduce air velocities and minimise noise
- High-specification acoustic insulation applied to ductwork throughout
- Ductwork supported with resilient hangers to reduce structural noise transmission
- Collaboration with Acoustic Consultants throughout the project to refine the design and execution
This detailed planning and high-quality implementation ensured the internal temperatures and humidity requirements were met, all while adhering to the demanding acoustic specifications for this technically complex performance space.
The Results
- Successfully achieved NR16 noise criteria in a highly sensitive acoustic environment
- Delivered a technically complex system that met strict thermal and humidity performance targets
- Helped create a high-quality performance venue suitable for world-class events
- Strengthened BMS Ltd’s reputation for delivering precision-engineered solutions for specialist spaces
